Roger Cohen Gets It Right Again

The New York Times‘ Roger Cohen again wrote an excellent and, as Glenn Greenwald pointed out, courageous op-ed today on U.S. Middle East policy and why it needs to seriously engage Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. It’s hard to understand why the Times does not put Cohen in its print edition more often, particularly given what I have thought over the past 15 years or so was the growing silliness of Tom Friedman’s columns. Cohen is at least willing to question conventional wisdom in a relatively consistent and thoughtful manner, while Friedman seems increasingly adrift in a world that remains stubbornly three-dimensional and consistently defies his sunny prescriptions and glib analysis.

  1. “growing silliness of Tom Friedman’s columns” :-)

Poor Friedman, not only did his wife lose billions in commercial real estate, his star is also sinking at the speaker circus.

Based on data obtained from dinner chit-chat painstakingly gathered throughout the day, it appears that Thomas Friedman’s speaking fees have recently fallen by 25%.

But if the Times kicks him out, someone else will pick him up …
